How to Have a Class Make a Thank You Card

Creating a thank you card is a great way to express how much you appreciate the contribution a person made to your class. Handmade cards can add a personal touch that will add sentimental value to the card through having the entire class make it. Having a class make a thank you card for a speaker or an important figure is a great activity for the entire students.

Instructions

    • 1

Delegate and divide the responsibility. Not only do you want to make the activity all-inclusive, but you can also use this as a time to start delegating and teaching responsibility. Divide the class into groups, assigning each group a different responsibility such as design, wording or presentation. This will make each child take on responsibility giving them each a sense of importance, as well as forcing them to work together as a team in a group.

Base the design around the occupation of the recipient. If the person you are presenting the card to is a farmer, for instance, consider making the card in the shape of a barn. Not only will the card be original but including a specific occupational theme will make the person feel as if you truly care and listened.

    • 3

Construct the card. Everyone should have a hand in the construction of the card after the design is settled, and you should consider making a few prototypes before the final is decided upon. Think of the materials you will use based on how it will be constructed. Cards can be made using a computer program, which is probably a better choice for children who are computer literate in higher grades. You can make handmade cards using materials like construction paper, glitter and other craft materials, which is better for younger children in lower grades.

Add your personal stamp. If one physically large card is used, then you can have each child write a personal message around one central message. Have each child hand write and sign their message or simply sign the card. If the children can't write yet, then having a printed listing of each child in the class on or attached to the card will make it special. You can also add a photo of the class if possible to have this same effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider the option of having each child make a separate card. If your class is talented enough, or you simply want to overwhelm the recipient with thanks, then you may want to have each child in the class make a separate card. Each child can write her own personal thank you message that describes her reason for thanking the individual. Be sure to introduce guidelines to keep the students on task and also to check over the completed cards.

  • To excite the children more, you can make this an extra credit assignment for minimal points that will add to their grade or give them a special incentive such as a pizza party or treats. Practice the presentation if you intend to give the card in a ceremony so that it goes as smoothly as possible when the time comes.

  • When children are divided into groups to complete the projects, monitor them closely to ensure the group is cohesive and on task.
