More and more, this type of evaluation is being adapted by companies and organizations as a way increase the incentive for optimal performance among its employees, for example by using the evaluation to determine an employee's salary and benefits. In addition to motivating employees, performance-based evaluations can also push employees toward self-diagnosis and professional growth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Collect data about the candidate's performance and accomplishment of the organization's goals---for example, in such areas as leadership competence. Some of the ways the data can be collected incdlue surveys, from sources that include clients, other members of the department in question or supervisors.

  2. Step 2

Create a new section within the document for each evaluation criteria. Examples of sections in an evaluation of a school principal include "Parent Participation in School Processes" and "Drop-out Rate".

  3. Step 3

Briefly outline the organizational goal that each section focuses on, for example decreasing the school drop-out rate, particularly among at-risk students. Analyze the candidate's degree of success in meeting each goal in relation to relevant professional standards. Use the collected data to support your statements.

  4. Step 4

Indicate at the end of each section whether the candidate has made no progress, some progress or significant progress in each area. State whether he has marginally, mostly or fully accomplished the given goal---if at all.

  5. Step 5

Recommend a course of action that will help the candidate make more progress and/or set new or adjusted personal goals.

  6. Step 6

Include a "Self-evaluation" section at the end of the document in which the candidate can reflect on her performance and progress.

Tips & Warnings
  • Conduct performance-based evaluations on a regular basis (e.g., annually or semi-annually) in order to encourage maximum self-reflection and self-correction.
