How to Remove Latex Paint From Hardwood Flooring

There is nothing more frustrating than spending a lot of time painting a room and then removing the drop cloth only to find that there is now paint all over your hardwood floors. Or perhaps you spilled latex paint on your hardwood floors when you tripped over the paint can. When you pull up old carpet, you might discover that the previous owners made a mess using latex paint and simply carpeted over it rather than addressing the problem. This is definitely a major problem, but it can be fixed rather easily and cheaply.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Liquid soap
  • Paper towels
  • Window scraper (or old credit card)
  • Denatured alcohol
  • Plastic wrap (or garbage bags)
  • Tape
  • Small brush (old toothbrush works fine)
  • Damp mop
  1. Step 1

If the spill just happened, try wiping it up immediately. Use paper towels or a damp rag. This will get a lot of it off if the paint is still wet. Be careful not to spread it around, but rather wipe it up. If that doesn't work or the stain is old, continue on.

  2. Step 2

Apply the liquid soap to the area with warm water. Then use a window scraper, reversing the blade, or an old credit card to scrape up the paint. Use paper towels or a rag to clean off the rest of the soap and water. Continue on if you are still having problems.

  3. Step 3

Pour denatured alcohol on the paint spots. Use enough to cover the entire area. This means that if you spilled an entire can of paint, you may need an entire gallon of alcohol.

  4. Step 4

Cover the area with plastic and tape down the sides. Allow this to set for about 10 minutes. This is especially true if you have a large area, or a hard-set stain.

  5. Step 5

Remove the plastic in a small area at a time, and use a small brush on the smaller splatters.

  6. Step 6

Use a mop for the larger areas, again, removing the plastic only over the areas you are ready to clean. You may need to use the scraper for some tougher spots as well.

  7. Step 7

Repeat Steps 4-6 if necessary. Clean the entire area with standard cleaners to get rid of the chemicals on the floor.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are some brand-name cleaners that claim to take out paint as well, such as "Goof Off." Be sure that you are dealing with latex paint before you start with these steps. They will not work on oil-based paints.
