Hot plates are useful for those who live in a dorm or a home without a stove. There are many types of hot plates; some aren't good quality, so make sure you do research if you're going to purchase one.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Single- or multiple-burner electric hot plate
  1. Step 1

Some hot plates have multiple burners. There are even induction hot plates that can only be used with ferrous metal cookware. Read the manufacturer's instructions before using.

  2. Step 2

Position your hot plate in an area away from anything flammable. Since you probably don't have an exhaust fan over your hot plate, you can place it by an open window while cooking.

  3. Step 3

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Every kitchen, even a portable one, should have a fire extinguisher.

  4. Step 4

Cook anything on a hot plate that you would cook on a regular stove. Keep in mind that your cooking may splatter, so position your hot plate on a surface that can be wiped clean.

  5. Step 5

Hot plates cook differently than stoves. They may take more or less time to heat up. Use caution as you get used to it.

  6. Step 6

If you want to keep foods warm while cooking for company, extra burners are needed. You can also take it to a potluck to keep your dish warm.
