How to Replace Window Grid Packages on Exterior Doors

Exterior door window grids are typically installed on both the interior side of the door and the exterior side. Some of these grids are permanently affixed to the door and will not come off. Others just snap in with clips or pins that are on the ends of the grids. Some exterior door window grids are constructed out of several routed and miter cut pieces of wood. This type of grid replacement is best completed by a skilled carpenter. Does this Spark an idea?

Use the putty knife to remove the old window grids. Place the putty knife against the end or tip of each grid piece. The end will be where the grid meets the door. Use the hammer to tap on the handle of the putty knife to loosen the grid tip. Complete this procedure on each grid tip. The number of tips will vary according to the size of the grid. Remove the grid from the door. Use the putty knife to slide under the edges of the window grid parts that are in direct contact with the glass if the grid will not come out. Tap lightly on the putty knife to loosen the grid.

Put together the new window grids if they are not already assembled. Follow the instructions to assemble the grids. Use wood glue to secure the cross bars when you are assembling them.

Use double-sided, dual-locking adhesive to secure the grids to the door for easy installation. Measure the length of the window in the door. Cut the appropriate amount of strips for the horizontal grid sections. Remove the protective covering from the tape and apply to the glass in the door where the grid will be positioned.

Measure the width of the window in the door. Cut the needed amount of strips for the vertical sections of the grid. Apply the tape to the glass.

    • 5

Insert the grid into the door. Make sure the horizontal and vertical grid parts are positioned directly onto the dual-locking tape. Press on the grid so it will adhere to the tape.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when trying to remove the grids. Use as little force as possible to remove them. Too much force will shatter the glass.
