Creating special touches for your own party or other special event, by hand, can be rewarding and fun. Place cards in holders are a nice addition that provide a personal touch and can be made to accommodate any theme. This article will offer tips and two easy ideas along with the step-by-step instructions, on how to create place card holders. Depending on your event's theme, there are hundreds of ways to create an attractive, coordinating place card holder.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • WRAPPED WIRE PLACE CARD HOLDER
  • Spool of 14-15 gauge wire (25-foot roll will make approximately 30 holders)
  • Safety goggles
  • Wire cutters
  • Pliers (needle nose will also work)
  • 2-inch clay pot, candle holder, sand, gravel, paint or other custom additions, if desired
  • BAMBOO PLACE CARD HOLDER
  • 4 feet or longer, bamboo pole 1½-inch wide or bigger (2 inches or more works best)
  • Saw (handsaw, hacksaw, miter saw)
  • 100-200 grit sandpaper
  • Safely goggles
  • Work gloves
  • Paint or desired embellishments

How to Create Two Types of Holders

  1. Step 1

    Wrapped Wire Place Card Holder
Using wire cutters, cut a length of wire approximately 3 inches longer than the height you want your finished place card holder to be (8 to 9 inches is average).

  2. Step 2

Grasp the end of the wire tightly with the pliers, holding the wire horizontally.
Hold the wire firmly in one hand and the pliers in the other hand. Slowly turn the pliers clockwise so that the wire wraps around the tip while applying an opposite wrapping motion with the other hand. Wrap the wire two times keeping the strands close and tight around the tip of the pliers.

  3. Step 3

The wire can be painted or bent in other designs to match your decor. The wire can be placed in a container of sand, gravel, rocks or any type of medium to hold it upright.

  4. Step 4

    Bamboo Place Card Holder
Start by placing the length of the bamboo pole onto your cutting table and cut it into pieces approximately 6 inches in length. Lightly sand bottom to remove burrs or splinters if necessary. Cut all of the place card holders you will need at this time.

  5. Step 5

Holding the 6-inch piece upright, cut a notch across either side of the opposite end, using a slow, firm motion until the cut is approximately a quarter-inch deep. Set the place card into the notched end and decorate as desired.

Tips & Warnings
  • A handsaw, hacksaw or miter saw is adequate but a power saw is quicker and less strenuous, especially if you are making place card holders for several guests. If your cuts are close to the bamboo joint, the piece you end up with will have a solid bottom and can hold water, sand or any other medium in which to place an object or weigh it down. Measure the full length of the pole and lightly mark sections of approximately 6 inches or more to use up the entire pole and eliminate waste.
  • Always wear eye protection when using any cutting tool.
