There are no concrete guidelines for writing a memorial plaque, but a little decorum is looked upon favorably in these cases. After all, you are attempting to immortalize a friend a relative via the written word. These suggestions may make your task easier.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pin down the essence of the person. Did she have a nickname? Did she resemble an animal? "We will always cherish the memory of Lucky Lars, our Polar Bear."

  2. Step 2

List the qualities you most admired in the person. Ask what it is about this person or group of people that makes them worthy of a memorial.

  3. Step 3

Inscribe the plaque with a meaningful quote by the person's favorite author, or simply a quote that meant a lot to the person. Maybe he loved Robert Frost and would have liked a quote from "The Road Not Taken."

  4. Step 4

Be positive and complimentary. Do not mention faults or shortcomings. We all have them but none of them belong on a memorial plaque.
