After you obtain your US citizenship , your minor children are automatically US citizens. Even though it is not required, there are many advantages to apply for certificate of naturalization for your minor children. The naturalization certificate never expires whereas the passport does. It is another form of proof of your US citizenship.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Minor’s US Green card
  • Parent’s Proof of US citizenship
  1. Step 1

Fill out form N-600 – Application for Certificate of Citizenship. Make sure to complete all required information otherwise the processing may get delayed. Enter “N/A” in places where the questions may not be relevant to you
Look at the bottom of this article for links to N-600 form and instructions. Also there is another eHow article which details out how to fill N-600 form.

  2. Step 2

Along with my application I attached the following
    - 2 color photographs. Link at bottom for Photograph standards
    - Copy of the minor’s Green card
    - Birth Certificate of Minor
    - My marriage certificate
    - Proof of US residence ( I attached employment record)

    - A check made out to “US Department of Homeland Security” as application fees (currently $460)
    - Copies of any other documents required

Send only copies. Do not send originals
Send your application package to the appropriate USCIS District or field office with jurisdiction you’re your place of residence.
Once you have filed your application you can check the application status online. Look at link at bottom of the article

  3. Step 3

Once the USCIS has processed your application (this should be approximately 1-2 months after you apply), you will receive a letter informing you about the place and time to bring your minor child.
Go to the place on the given date with the appointment letter

  4. Step 4

After you arrive at the place, there is generally a place where you deposit your letter. You then wait in the waiting area till your minor child’s name is called. Go to the window where the name was called from and collect the certificate of naturalization.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can apply for citizenship as soon as the parents receive their certificate of naturalization.
  • Check your naturalization certificate for accuracy before you leave the building. It is very tedious to correct any mistakes afterwards.
  • Do not miss your appointment. It will take several months to schedule another one
