How to break the TV habit of a toddler

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Art Activities like Paint, Crayons, Markers etc..
  1. Step 1

Break the habit right away. We started this with our niece and she no longer has the interest of the TV. Start your day as usual but Without the TV on. He/She may throw a tantrum, but I used time out to control that.

  2. Step 2

Introduce other things you can do besides watching TV, like go outside and color, or paint etc. If you have a park nearby you can go to the park and get outside for a walk. take a small bucket or bag with you and have them pick up things along the way like leaves, rocks, flowers etc...so that you can make an art project out of it when you get home.

  3. Step 3

Basically keep your child occupied with more creative projects and only allow TV for 2 hours a day. You can keep them occupied with things like helping with the laundry, cleaning and playing.

  4. Step 4

If your child keeps having meltdown over the TV not being turned on, use time out for the tantrum. I set the oven timer for 3 minutes and the child sits in timeout for that time. They should get the hint that throwing a tantrum does not get the TV on but gets them put in timeout instead.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't get frustrated with your child, again use time out (it worked for my son and my nieces and nephews)the more upset you get the more out of control the child gets.
