How to Bolt Rig a Fishing Pole
A bolt rig, or semi-fixed rig, on a fishing pole is necessary to safely fish for carp. It allows your lead to discharge should your mainline break from the weight of a large carp without endangering the fish. These how-to steps are simple to follow, but assume general fishing knowledge and experience.
Things You'll Need
- Fishing reel/rod
- Tulip bead or safety clip
- Lead with swivel attached
- Swivel
- Nylon mono-filament for a hooklink
Instructions
-
-
1
Thread your lead with its swivel onto the mainline of your fishing pole (the line between the lead and the rod). Thread the tulip bead on the mainline.
-
2
Tie the extra swivel on the end of the mainline--this becomes your mainline swivel.
-
-
3
Push your tulip bead over the mainline swivel. Then push the swivel attached to your lead over the tulip bead's end.
-
4
Use nylon mono-filament to make a hooklink, then tie the hooklink onto your mainline swivel.
-
5
Test the bolt rig before fishing. Hold up the hooklink and give your rig a firm tug. If the lead separates from the tulip bead and slides down the mainline, you have made it correctly.

Tips & Warnings
If you don't bolt rig successfully, the result is that the carp, should it break your line, will swim away with your line and lead still attached. This will ultimately result in snagging the carp and killing it.
