Prevent the files on the SD card from being overwritten. As soon as you are aware that you have files you need to recover from a SD card, stop using the card immediately. When a file gets deleted, it does not get removed from the SD card, though the space it occupied gets marked as "available." As long as a new file does not get written to that space, there is a good chance you can recover the file.

Download and install file recovery software. There are lots of different file recovery software packages on the market. Some are better than others and most cost money. Pandora Recovery and Recover Files are two free packages for Windows that do a good job. You can also get one of the Linux-based file recovery packages for free.

Insert your SD card into the SD card reader for your computer. In some instances you can use the sync cable of your camera (or other portable device) to allow the computer to read the SD card as a drive from the device.

Load the file recovery software and select the drive to be recovered. Most operating systems see the SD card as another drive for file purposes. Direct the software to the SD card and scan. Some software performs the scan automatically, while other software requires you click the "scan" button.

Select the files you wish to recover and recover them to your targeted location. Most recovery software presents you with a list of files available to be recovered after you direct the software to the SD card and scan it. Highlight the files you wish to recover and click the recover button. If you were not previously asked where you want to put the recovered files, the software should present you with that question now.
