How to Make a Candle Spinner
A candle spinner is a miniature energy machine that demonstrates the power of light and heat energy. Make a candle spinner of your own with simple household items.
Things You'll Need
- 8-inch plywood square
- Drill
- ¼ inch drill bit
- ¼ inch wooden dowel
- Smallest drill bit
- Needle
- 4 craft "popsicle" sticks
- Scissors
- 2 plastic film canisters
- Glue
- Nail
- Modeling clay
- Package of birthday candles
- Matches or lighter
Instructions
-
-
1
Drill a ¼-inch hole in the center of the plywood square, and fit the dowel rod into it, standing vertically.
-
2
Drill a ¾-inch deep hole vertically into the top of the dowel, using the smallest possible drill bit, and fit the needle into it.
-
-
3
Glue the craft sticks together at their centers to make a propeller, and make a small indentation in the center with the nail. This will be the bottom of the propeller that will later rest on the needle.
-
4
Cut both film canisters into even quarters by making vertical cuts with your scissors down the length of the canisters and through the bottom.
-
5
Cut the small plastic lip from the top of each canister piece.
-
6
Glue one canister piece to each end of the propeller. The canister piece should all be facing the same direction.
-
7
Balance the propeller the stand's needle, pressing little balls of clay into the plastic canister wedges as needed to fully balance the propeller.
-
8
Roll the remaining clay into a ring that will sit on the spinner base around the dowel.
-
9
Press the candles into the clay so that they stand upright. The spinner is now ready to light.
