How to Install Propane Fireplace Inserts
Propane fireplace inserts are an energy-efficient alternative to a standard wood-burning fireplace. Fireplace inserts also burn cleaner and do not pollute the air, which can be helpful for those with asthma or other breathing problems. Some cities have enacted air quality regulations that restrict wood burning. These rules do not apply to propane fireplace inserts, making them a better choice if you want to heat your home all winter long. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Lay a large piece of thick cardboard in front of the fireplace opening. This will protect the brick from damage while you push the propane fireplace insert into place. Have an assistant help you lift the fireplace insert onto the cardboard. Slide it along the cardboard into the fireplace, making sure it is directly in the middle of the opening.

2
Remove the chimney damper. From the top of the roof, drop a flue liner down into the fireplace. Go back into the house and connect the flue collar adapter on the top of the fireplace insert to the bottom of the flue liner. Use tin snips to trim any extra flue liner. Secure the end in place with the screws included in the fireplace insert's installation hardware.

3
Use chalk to mark where the propane fireplace insert hits the front of the fireplace. Slide the fireplace insert back out of the opening so you can access the holes on the top and sides of the unit. Align the top and side extender panels so that they cover the chalk lines on the fireplace. Tighten the screws to lock the panels into place.
-
4
Use chimney caulk to seal the seams between the fireplace insert and the extender panels. Be sure to seal the points where the top and side panels meet.
-
5
Attach insulation strips onto the rear panel of the propane fireplace insert. Push it back into the fireplace opening so that the extender panels rest flush against the front edge of the fireplace. Ideally, you want an airtight seal between the fireplace opening and the insert to prevent heat from leaking out the chimney.
