How to Become a Director of Development
The job description of a Director of Development will vary depending on the industry. Obtain education in nonprofit management, marketing or public relations. While other educational backgrounds can lead to a position as Director of Development, these are the most common educational backgrounds held by those in similar positions.

Gain some experience volunteering for a nonprofit organization. Your degree program may require you to have a certain number of hours of volunteer experience, or you can gain some on your own. If you're looking to enter a different industry, find an internship opportunity within your target sector.

Obtain some writing experience. Volunteer to help with grant writing during your internship or volunteer experience. Offer your writing services free to local nonprofit organizations to write press releases, news articles or grants. Writing will be a key function of your role as Director of Development, so having some clips (samples) to show off at interviews will help.

Assist with local fundraisers. Volunteer to serve on organizing committees for the local Relay for Life, SPCA functions or other charity events. The more experience you have under your belt, the more successful you'll be at gaining interviews.

Create a professional resume that highlights your experience in fundraising, marketing, event management, grant writing and promotional writing. Send your resume out to local nonprofit agencies or companies within the industry you want to work. Follow up on your resume submission with a phone call after a week.

Be willing to accept a different position within your targeted industry or company. Often, there is only one Director of Development position that may currently be filled.
