How to Treat Dental Pain

If you have severe dental pain, you should see a dentist for a proper diagnosis and to get to the root of the problem. After you see a dentist, you can use a variety of products to ease the pain while you are at home. There are many causes of dental pain, such as sensitive teeth or swollen and bleeding gums. The easiest way to treat dental pain is by changing toothpaste, using a medicated mouthwash, using an on-the-spot pain reliever gel or taking pain reliever pills.

Instructions

    • 1

Diagnose the source of the pain. At-home treatment will differ based on what is causing the pain. Ask yourself these questions: Do your teeth hurt when you brush them or bite into something cold? Do your gums hurt? Did you just have a dental procedure? Do you have a toothache?

Use a sensitive-teeth toothpaste, such as Synsodyne, to relieve pain caused by sensitive teeth. Synsodyne strengthens sensitive teeth and relieves pain, and it is recommended by dentists.

    • 3

Use a fluoride mouthwash, such as ACT, to strengthen your teeth. Fluoride strengthens teeth, helps prevent tooth decay and can relieve pain.

    • 4

Use Peridex or Periogard to help relieve swollen and bleeding gums. These mouthwashes work to treat gingivitis by reducing the amount of bacteria in the mouth. People with suppressed immune systems are advised to use either Peridex or Periogard to decrease the formation of mouth sores.

    • 5

Use an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Ibuprofen, to treat pain. Only take the recommended dose and discontinue using after a few days. If the pain persists after taking pain pills for a few days, you should consult a dentist, because you could have a serious dental problem.

    • 6

Use a numbing gel, such as Orajel, for on-the-spot pain relief. Orajel treats sensitive teeth, mouth sores, denture pain, toothache pain and bleeding gums. Put a drop of the medicine on your finger and place it directly on the source of the pain.
