How to Grow Indoor Carrots

When there isn't any available space outdoors or the climate isn't right, carrots can be grown indoors under the right conditions. Because carrots are the root of the plant, the container for the carrots must be deep enough to accommodate the carrots as well as the surrounding soil. With enough sunlight, carrots can be grown indoors for at least 9 months each year. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare a large container with potting soil that drains well. Avoid using soil from outdoors, as garden soil does poorly in containers. The soil you choose should be a high-quality commercial potting soil. Unless you are growing a baby carrot variety, the pot should be at least 12 inches deep to accommodate carrots 7 to 9 inches long. Choose a pot that has holes in the bottom to drain water and place a tray or plate under the pot. Fill the container with soil to within an inch of the top.

    • 2

Sprinkle the the carrot seeds across the top of the potting soil. Press the seeds into the soil until they are about 1/4-inch beneath the top of the soil. Place the pot in a windowsill or another location that receives full sunlight.

    • 3

Water the carrot seeds gently to keep them from being pushed too far under the soil. Sprinkle water across the soil by hand or by spraying it with a watering can. Continue watering the seeds every few days, keeping the soil moist.

    • 4

Thin out the seedlings once they have sprouted until the young plants are 2 inches apart. Nurture the seedlings with regular watering, keeping the pot in the sunlight for anywhere from 65 to 75 days.
