The paw pad on a dog's foot serves a similar purpose as shoes on humans. It protects the dog's foot and makes walking more comfortable. However, it is possible for the paw pad to become injured. It is important for dog owners to pay attention to their dog and treat injuries as soon as possible.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pay attention to the way your dog walks. If your dog is limping or gingerly walking, it may be a sign of paw pad injury.

  2. Step 2

Carefully examine your dog's paw if limping is observed. Compare it to the other paws and check for any discoloration or discharge.

  3. Step 3

Watch for spots of blood on the ground where your dog walks. Blood is a likely sign of a paw pad injury.

  4. Step 4

Pay attention if your dog begins licking his paw excessively. He may be doing this because of pain from an injury.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a good idea to take your dog to the vet if you believe your dog is injured. Even if you think you know how to fix the injury on the surface, there may be underlying problems.
