How to Use WiFi in a Nintendo DS Lite

The Nintendo DS Lite enables players to connect to friends and strangers with the handheld unit. Players can connect over a Wi-Fi connection to play against each other, swap items in role playing games, or in some cases even chat online. Taking advantage of your Nintendo DS's Wi-Fi capability is fairly simple by using a relatively easy setup process. Options in Wi-Fi gaming will depend heavily on the game itself, with some Wi-Fi games limiting players to friend lists or randomized gameplay.

Instructions

    • 1

Use your stylus to enter the settings by tapping the "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Settings" icon on your DS Lite start screen.

    • 2

Tap one of the three connection boxes with your stylus (such as "Connection 1").

    • 3

Select the box labeled "Search for an Access Point" by tapping it with your stylus.

    • 4

Wait for the Nintendo DS to locate your Wi-Fi connection.

    • 5

Discern whether or not your connection is secured. Check the icon next to your Wi-Fi connection, with an open blue lock icon signifying an unsecured connection, a closed red lock icon signifying a connection with WEP security, and a gray closed lock signifying a connection that is current incompatible with the Nintendo DS Lite device.

    • 6

Form a Wi-Fi connection. Tap on the name of your wireless connection. Wait for blue-icon connections to instantly form and type in the wireless router key for red connections when prompted.

    • 7

Play online. Check capabilities by identifying Wi-Fi enabled games (indicated on the packaging with the "Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection" circular logo). Opt to use your connection to swap items and play against friends or randomized Nintendo gamers in multiplayer modes when prompted by the game.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your wireless access point does not display in Step 5, move the DS closer to the wireless router and ensure broadcast settings are enabled on the router. If you receive a gray locked icon indicating incompatibility in Step 5, change your wireless router settings to enable WEP security.
