Things You'll Need:
- DreadHead Dread Wax
- Rubberbands
- Dread Comb (small toothed comb)
- DreadHead Shampoo
- A Friend to Help Out
-
Step 1
Visit the Dread Head HQ. They have tons of products to help make and maintain your dreads, such as wax, combs, lock accelerator, and shampoo.
-
Step 2
Wash your hair. Clean hair with no residue dreads faster. Dread Head Shampoo leaves no extra chemicals or residue, so this one is the best.
-
Step 3
Wait until your hair air dries.
-
Step 4
Section your hair, using rubberbands. Part your hair in 1 inch by 1 inch squares for each dread. Bigger dreads, bigger parts.
-
Step 5
There are several methods to dread hair. Choosing between the methods depends mostly by what type of hair you have.
Straight hair, thin hair, Caucasion hair, and Asian hair, dread best with the backcombing method.
Curly hair, wavy hair, and African hair, dread best with the twisting method. -
Step 6
Now its start to dread. You probably want to start at the back and work your way forward, but that part is not vital.
Backcombing: Use the dread comb to start backcombing, starting about an inch or two from the roots of your hair. Comb towards the root, making dread knots. Move down your hair, backcombing about an inch or so at a time.
Twisting: Use about a drop of Dread Wax about the size of a Skittle and work it into your hair, so when you twist there won't be any loose hairs. After that twist each section counterclockwise until the ends of your hair. -
Step 7
Put rubberbands at the end of the dread.
-
Step 8
Now repeat those last steps like a hundred times (two hundred if you have a big head or are making small dreads) until your whole head is dreaded up.
-
Step 9
Wait two or three weeks before you wash your hair. Then wash it with the residue-free shampoo. You should wash your hair once or twice a week. If you don't they will look like crap. And your hair will smell.
-
Step 10
Rub a little bit of dread wax on your dreads after washing them.
-
Step 11
Palm rolling helps keep loose hairs in place.
-
Step 12
Rubbing your fingers clockwise at the root helps tighten roots.
