When you come across new vocabulary in school, it can be a challenge to learn the difference between words that sound similar like "homogeneous" and "heterogeneous." Terms that you learn in science class may not seem important, but when you encounter these words in everyday life you will be glad that you did your homework. Mnemonic devices can be very helpful when trying to learn new vocabulary as can repeated use of flash cards. Do not get discouraged when you are faced with a new challenge; you will not regret putting in the extra work.

      Study the prefixes of the words "homogeneous" and "heterogeneous." "Homo" means "same" and "alike" while "hetero" means "mixed" and "unlike." Since the prefix is the only difference between these two words, focusing on the meanings of "homo" and "hetero" is the most important step to differentiating the words.

      Make a flash card for each of the words. A "homogeneous" mixture is one that does not look as though it is made up of multiple ingredients. If you heat water on the stove and add sugar until it completely dissolves, this is a homogeneous mixture because the two ingredients are not separately identifiable when you look at it.

      A "heterogeneous" mixture is one in which the multiple ingredients are easily identifiable. If you put pebbles in water, for example, they will not dissolve and therefore the mixture is heterogeneous because you can see the two ingredients.

      Connect the meaning of the the prefixes of the words to the meaning of the words themselves. A "homogeneous" mixture is "alike" because the mixture appears to be the same throughout. You cannot tell that there are multiple substances, rather, it looks uniform.

      A "heterogeneous" mixture is "unlike" because the ingredients are not like one another. You can tell that there is more than one substance and the mixture does not look uniform.

      Ask a friend or family member to quiz you randomly. Once you understand the terms thoroughly you will be able to ace the pop-quizzes without hesitation.
