If you're tired of online scams, then you may want to look at some of the many ways you can create work at home opportunities for you and your family. Whether you choose to run a small business out of your home as a sole proprietor or you prefer to incorporate, there are many tax breaks you can take as a work at home employee.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

List your skills and talents. The best place to start when trying to figure out how to create work at home opportunities is with the skills and abilities you already have. For example, if you are a fabulous cook and enjoy entertaining dozens of people at a time, you might consider starting a catering business. Love to design flyers? Start a desktop publishing business.

  2. Step 2

Research the competition. Once you've made a list of your abilities, you'll want to research competition in the area and see if there is a need for additional services. You can start your search with the yellow pages, where most businesses will be listed.

  3. Step 3

Get the word out. If you've figured out what you're good out, have a solid business idea, have researched the competition and feel you're ready to get started, you should start by getting the word out. Have some business cards and flyers made up (these should look professional, so you may need to hire someone to create these for you) and start telling everyone everywhere you go. Tell family and friends about your business, put flyers up in the grocery store, laundry mat, library and post office. Hand out business cards to anyone you make eye contact with throughout the day. Examples include: bank teller at your bank, sales clerk at your favorite store, friends you've met for lunch, the waitress who waits on your table, the man who fixes your tire at the local service shop. The list is endless. Be proactive and tell everyone, especially at first. Eventually, your excellent service will help you get additional referrals and word of mouth advertisement, but for now you want as many people as possible to know about your product or service.

Tips & Warnings
  • There are literally tons of businesses and services you can offer from your home. Just a few are dog grooming, desktop publishing, pet sitting, interior decorating, writing, selling on Ebay, child care, preschool, cloth diaper cleaning service, virtual assistant, tutoring, accounting and seamstress.
  • If you plan to run a business out of your home that will have people coming and going or a lot of shipments being sent out or taken in, then you'll need to check your local zoning laws and your neighborhood's covenants to make certain you won't be in violation.
