The runner's straight-leg slide gets her to second base in time.

Sliding into a base in softball can make the difference between winning and losing a game. A good runner knows how and when to do a proper slide. Like everything else in softball, it can only be done correctly through practice.

Instructions

    • 1

Take the inside line on the base path. If possible, try to get between the fielder and the person catching the ball. Anything that forces the defense to make a good throw and catch can help the sliding runner.

    • 2

Run at the base hard and fast. Approximately 8 to 10 feet from the base, drop to the ground with one leg forward. Tuck the other leg under your rear end.

    • 3

Slide hard and fast with the forward leg aimed at the bag. A strong slide could potentially force the ball out of the fielder's glove.

    • 4

Come up to a standing position after you make contact with the base. Avoid going into the base in a sitting position. This gives the fielder more room to tag you, and there's a good chance you will slide past the bag.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wear sliders. Sliders are nylon or lycra shorts that go under your softball shorts. They have padding so you do not harm yourself.

  • Do not slide at first base unless you are about to be tagged.

  • It is best to practice a slide step by step. It takes a lot of practice to be able to slide well.
