How to Hem Dress Pants With a Cuff

You would be surprised how many of us are walking around in clothing that doesn't fit properly. In today's market, apparel is massed produced to fit as many people as possible. You would be amazed at how much better you look and feel in clothes that are properly tailored. Raising or lowering the hem of cuffed pants can make all the difference when it comes to appearance.

Things You'll Need

• Measuring tape
• Pencil and paper
• Iron & ironing board
• Sewing machine
• Chalk or fabric pencil
• Needle and thread

Instructions

1. Measure the depth of the cuff and existing hem. Write down those measurements, as well as the change in length you would like to make.

2. Release the existing hem, and use the iron and ironing board to press the pants flat, using steam, if necessary.

3. Cut off excess fabric in accordance with the change in length you would like to make. For example, if you want to shorten the pants by 2 inches, cut off 2 inches of fabric. After cutting the fabric, hand or machine stitch the raw edge of the material to prevent fraying.

4. Using the measurements recorded in Step 1, press up the new hem the same amount as the original hem. Use your needle and thread to blind stitch the hem in place. Press thoroughly.

5. Fold back the cuff the same measurement as the original cuff. Press thoroughly.

6. Using your needle and thread tack the new cuff to the inseam and outseam of the pants. Press thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings

• Before cutting off any excess fabric, be sure to measure carefully. Once the fabric is cut, the measurement of the hem and cuff cannot be adjusted to lengthen them.
