CRT, or Cathode Ray Tube, monitors are much larger than LCD computer monitors. CRT monitors allow you to adjust the screen and display size through your desktop properties and through small knobs or buttons on the monitor itself. These settings allow you to change anything from the screen size to the color of the display. Adjusting your settings on your CRT monitor to get a full screen display takes only a few minutes and doesn't require you to exit any programs or restart your computer.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Adjust the height setting on your CRT monitor. The exact buttons or knobs will vary based on your monitor model. If your monitor has only one knob or button, turn or push it. This will display a settings menu. Choose the height setting which looks like a rectangle being stretched vertically. Increase the height until the top and bottom of the screen are full. You will either turn a knob clockwise or use your arrow keys to adjust.
If your CRT monitor has multiple knobs or buttons, choose the button with the symbol described above.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the width setting on your CRT monitor. The menu or button symbol will look like a tall rectangle being stretched horizontally. Increase the width until the display fills both sides of your screen.

  3. Step 3

Adjust the screen position if necessary. If part of the screen is actually positioned off the screen, center the screen position.
The vertical position adjust symbol looks like a large square with a small square partially inside it at the top.
The horizontal position adjust symbols looks like a large square with a small square partially inside it to the right.

  4. Step 4

Re-adjust your height and width after adjusting the screen position if necessary.

  5. Step 5

Change your display settings on your desktop if text and images appear stretched or squat. Right-click on any empty space on your desktop and choose "Properties." Move the slider under "Screen Resolution" to adjust the resolution and ultimately the actual size of objects you view on your desktop. The higher the resolution, the smaller the icons that will appear.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you purchased a new monitor, try adjusting your display settings from your desktop first. If any software came with your monitor, install it before adjusting settings to ensure you receive the best possible display.
  • Don't alter any settings beyond the screen size settings. These can distort the contrast and color of your monitor.
