How to Remove Glued-Down Linoleum
Many older homes have a layer of linoleum securely glued to hardwood flooring under it. It's possible to remove the linoleum and its adhesive to expose and refinish the hardwood on the bottom layer. It's not necessary to use harsh chemicals to remove linoleum and adhesive; rent a wallpaper steamer and you'll get the job done in less than a day. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Steamer for removing wallpaper
- Large metal scraper such as a large putty knife
- Kitchen scruber used for non-stick cookware
- Old cloths

Place the steamer applicator on a portion of the linoleum. Let it sit there for one to two minutes. Remove.

Quickly begin scraping the linoleum with a large metal scraper. Use long, smooth strokes. Scoop up as much of the adhesive as you can with the scraper.

Immediately wipe over the area with the type of scrubber used on non-stick cookware. Scrub a little to loosen all the remaining bits of adhesive on the floor.

Dry the area with an old cloth.

Move on to another small area and repeat Steps 1 through 4.

Tips & Warnings
If there is a lot of adhesive left on the floor after you steam and remove the linoleum, repeat the steaming process.
