How to Work a Defibrillator

A defibrillator can be the difference between life and death for a heart attack victim. By delivering an electrical impulse to the heart, these devices "jump start" the heart, putting it back into a rhythm pattern that can save a person from imminent death. Before a defibrillator can save a life, however, you must understand how to use one. Most portable defibrillators are automated and using one is pretty basic once you know what to do.

Instructions

  1. How To Use A Defibrillator

    • 1

Start by turning the device on. In some instances, when you open the case of a portable defibrillator it will automatically turn on.

    • 2

Remove the victim's shirt so that the defibrillator can make contact with his bare skin. Also remove any metal objects, such as necklaces, watches or rings.

    • 3

Place one pad on the upper-right chest area and one on the lower-left chest area. For correct placement, review the diagram on the outside of the defibrillator you are going to use.

    • 4

Wait for the device to record the victim's heart pattern. Unlike doctor pads that allow for manual shock settings, portable devices adjust the shock as needed.

    • 5

Wait for the machine to tell you it's okay to press the shock button. Press the button when you are told to do so.

    • 6

After the shock is delivered, check the victim's pulse and breathing. Allow the device to determine if another shock is required.
