Build Plant Stands

The best thing about making your own plant stands is that there are no rules. You can make one out of almost anything at all, and you are limited only by your own creativity. They can be as simple or as complex as you want, and making your own plant stands is much more economical than buying them.
You can quickly and easily make an unusual plant stand with nothing more than some old magazines, and you won't even need any tape or glue. The thicker the magazines are, the better they'll be able to support your plant. Remove any of those stiff, thick page inserts like subscription cards, advertisements and fold-outs. They tend to cause the pages of the magazine to pop out of the finished plant stand. You can also use old books with the hard covers removed, if you wish. Some monthly publications that often boast high page counts include "Good Housekeeping," "Cosmo" and "Vogue."

Instructions

    • 1

Set a magazine face up on a flat working surface. Position it as if you plan to read it.

    • 2

Open the cover to your left and flip through the first 10 pages. Page them over to the left.

    • 3

Hold the cover and 10 pages together and fold them down the middle, creasing them sharply. They don't have to be perfect. Don't worry if the top corners poke out a little, because the weight of a potted plant will pack them into place. Tuck the edges of the pages into the binding of the magazine.

    • 4

Flip and fold every 10 pages or so in the same manner until you have folded all of them, except for the back cover.

    • 5

Fold the back cover down the middle the same way you folded all the other pages. Wrap it around the first set of pages that you folded, and tuck all of the edges securely into the binding. Use this short plant stand as it is, or make two or three just like it and stack them to make a stand as tall as you wish.
