How to Choose Fishing Waders
Choosing the right fishing waders is largely a personal choice. It depends on your idea of comfort, your preferred body temperature and your budget. Fishing in cold water and weather and fishing in a hot, tropical climate require different waders. Casual fishermen and those who just want an emergency pair may opt for low cost over comfort. Whatever you decide to choose, keep an emergency wader repair kit handy in case of unexpected rips or leaks.

1
Choose rubber fishing waders if you're looking for an inexpensive option, don't fish that often or want a back-up pair. They do tend to be more uncomfortable than other wader options.
-
2
Look at breathable fishing waders for the most comfort. They are more expensive than most other wader options and are usually worn by seasoned anglers.

3
Consider neoprene fishing waders if you're fishing in cold climates and water. They're also more durable than rubber, but tend to be too warm for tropical climates.
-
4
Decide if you want a boot or stocking foot attached to your waders. The stocking version is usually made from neoprene and are appropriate if you already have fishing boots you want to use. It's also an ideal option for those who wish to walk around and hike during a fishing.
-
5
Choose waders that are already attached to boots if you want to stay put while fishing and prefer not to carry around extra items.
-
6
Look for wader reinforcement in your thigh, knee and seat area. Check to see the seams are reinforced with an overlap of wading material, and then glued or sown shut.
-
7
Pick a wader belt made from polyester and a quick-release feature. According to Fly Fishing Colorado (see Resources), your waders should have a belt loop to secure the belt. You can also buy waders with removable suspenders with Velcro tabs and adjustable options.
