When your washing machine doesn't work as well as it should, you may find that the problems stems from simply putting too much laundry in the machine at one time. Finding out your washing machine's capacity can keep you from overloading the washing machine, keeping it functioning for longer as it doesn't have to work as hard. There are a few ways to determine washing machine capacity, and once you know, you'll be able to achieve optimum results with every load.

From Quick Guide: Washing Machines 101
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask a salesman before you purchase the water. Ask him specifically how many kilograms or pounds of clothes can go into the washing machine. He should be able to tell you. Don't accept vague descriptions, such as "It can wash a king-sized comforter," ask instead how many pounds it can wash.

  2. Step 2

Call the manufacturer of the washing machine and ask it what the true capacity is. Service representatives will have the specifications for all of the different models and will be able to tell you approximately how many pounds of clothes you can put in. When you know the exact weight of what you can put in your washing machine, you can weigh your loads on a bathroom scale before putting them in the washing machine.

  3. Step 3

Check your owner's manual to find out the drum size. You'll find it in the specifications section of the manual.

  4. Step 4

Take a look at the washer yourself. The clothes must be able to tumble while being washed. If they don't tumble, then you have too many clothes for your washing machine capacity. A single-person washing machine holds about 14 lbs. of clothes, while a family sized or "extra capacity" holds about 24 lbs.
