How to Make a Collapsible Hula Hoop
Hula hoops can be enjoyable for kids and adults alike, but they can be challenging to transport. The large, circular shape that makes a hula hoop a game makes an obstacle when packing it into a car or closet for storage. Luckily, hula hoops aren't expensive, and you can make yours collapsible for travel or compatibility. The hula hoop in this article is 2 feet in diameter, but you can customize your measurements as needed.

1
Measure your hula hoop's diameter. Multiply that number by three to determine the amount of elastic needed.
-
2
Hold the hula hoop and cut it in half to create two semicircles. Cut the semicircles in half to create four total arc pieces.
-
-
3
Thread the elastic through all four arc pieces. Hold the elastic tight and tie a knot to secure the ends to one another. This can be difficult because you want to have tension on the elastic at this time.
-
4
Let go of the hula hoop. The pull of the elastic should shape the arcs back into a circle. Adjust the elastic by pulling it through the hoop arcs to reposition the knot into the middle of an arc piece.
-
5
Pack up the hula hoop by folding it along the cut ends and allowing the elastic to stretch outside of the hoop.

Tips & Warnings
You may want to sand the ends of the arc pieces to get rid of any excess plastic shavings created by sawing.
