Decorative tiles are no more difficult to clean than tile floor and countertops. Beautiful tile effects are found as sink backsplashes; around swimming pools and fountains; on stair risers; on the wall in the form of plates, murals, masks and three-dimensional sculptures; as window, door and roof trim; incorporated into furniture; in ceilings; and in showers. The tiles may be made of terra cotta, tin or metal, porcelain, and natural or manufactured stone or clay, and may be painted or glazed. Tiles may be permanently glued or set in place, and may be surrounded by grout. The "what" and "how" of tile, mounting surface and adhesive determines how each is cleaned.

  9. Step 2

    Apply petroleum jelly, wearing gloves.

  10. Step 3

Let sit 15 minutes, then rinse clean with water and rags. Keep petroleum-jelly-contaminated water from flowing back into pool or fountain.

  11. Step 4

Repeat treatment if hard water deposits remain.

Tips & Warnings
  • To dry the sides of a stained swimming pool, lower the water level by a few inches.
  • Do not use metal abrasives on tile surfaces.
