How to Clean Snorkel Gear

The mask and snorkel, which is used to let a swimmer keep his face in the water but still breathe, can accumulate a fine, sand-like grit as it's being used. Not only is this grit irritating to the snorkeler, it may eventually degrade the surface of the mask or begin to clog the snorkel. The best solution is to keep your snorkel gear clean with fresh water. Don't use abrasive cleaners; they may damage the snorkel.

Things You'll Need

• Loose or open-weave mesh bag
• Mild dish soap

Instructions

1. Place your snorkel and mask into a loosely woven mesh bag. The material of the bag doesn't matter; it just needs to be open enough so water can move through it easily.

2. Dunk the bag containing the snorkel and mask in fresh water.

3. Swish the bag vigorously for 15 to 30 seconds. This will help clear out any sand and other residue inside the snorkel and mask.

4. Retrieve the bag from the water, remove the snorkel and mask, and dunk them in a tub of cool, soapy water. Remove the mask and snorkel and rinse them clean in running fresh water. Hang them out of direct sunlight to drip dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Soak your snorkel gear in fresh water when you return home from your snorkeling trip to thoroughly remove any residue.
