The phrase "planting by the moon" refers to the 1,000-year-old practice of planting seeds and crops according to the phases of the moon and the zodiac signs associated with each plant's peak growth. Just as the moon controls the tides and large bodies of water, it controls the water in the earth. Planting by the moon uses these times when the moon has drawn more water into the soil and the energies of earth, fire, water and air are at their peak.

Things You'll Need:

  • Flower plants or seeds
  • Small garden shovel or spade
  1. Step 1

Find out the astrological sign associated with your plants. Many flowers thrive best when planted under an air sign. See the article in the resources section entitled "Calculating Lunar Planting Dates" for an in-depth discussion of your flower's astrological signs.

  2. Step 2

Choose the right moon phase for planting. According to Divine Inspiration Publications, the full moon draws energy down toward the roots at the same time that gravity is pulling water into the soil. This time in the lunar phase, as the moon begins to wane, is ideal for flowering plants and bulbs. It's also the best time for transplants and cuttings.

  3. Step 3

Use your flower's astrological sign and moon phase to create the lunar planting date. Lunar planting dates represent the absolute ideal peak for planting your flowers and ensure the healthiest root and leaf growth and the largest blooms because the soil and plant are nurtured by the moon and elemental energies.

  4. Step 4

Wait until nightfall to bring your flowers outside. Work the soil with intention, respecting the energies at play. Use the garden shovel to dig a hole for each flower. Remove the flower from the pot, loosen the root ball with your hands so that it's not one rock-solid clump, and plant as you would at any other time. Lightly water. The moon's gravitational pull will hold the water to the roots so the plant can begin to thrive.

  5. Step 5

Use organic planting materials. According to E. A. Crawford, author of "The Lunar Garden: Planting by the Moon Phases," pesticides and other garden chemicals interrupt the flower's natural interaction with nature's rhythms and energies. Flowers respond best to moon planting when grown organically.
