How to Cut Shingle Molding

Shingle molding is used to provide additional detail to the fascia on homes. It is installed at the top of the fascia board, butting the bottom of the shingles--hence, the name. It is also commonly known as "rake molding" because it is typically installed only along the rake, or sloped, fascia on the gabled ends of homes.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Tape measure
    • Saw (hand or miter)
      • 1

Place a piece of shingle molding on the fascia with one end butting into the peak of the roof. Along the bottom of the shingle molding, mark where it crosses the joint created by the fascia boards meeting in the peak of the roof.

      • 2

Draw a line from the top corner of the shingle molding to the mark you made on the bottom.

      • 3

Use a saw to cut along this line. Place the shingle molding back on the fascia and test to see that it follows the joint where the two fascia boards meet. If it doesn't, re-mark and re-cut the molding until it does match.

      • 4

Scribe a line on the back side of the molding at the bottom corner of the fascia, using the fascia as a guide. Make sure the shingle molding is lined up on the joint at the top of the rake, or this cut will be off.

      • 5

Cut along the scribed line and test the fit. Re-scribe and re-cut as needed until it is flush with the edge of the fascia.

      • 6

Repeat the process for the other side of the gable.
