How to Prepare for the 460 Postal Exam

The 460 postal exam is used to test the skills and abilities of potential mail carriers. It consists of four sections that test your ability to follow complicated oral directions, remember addresses, distinguish between similar numbers and identify proper mailing addresses. Only persons who score 70 percent or better will be considered for an interview, so preparedness for the test is essential. Practice your memory and recall skills. One of the four portions of the test is the address memory assessment. For this part of the test, you will be shown a series of addresses, then asked questions about them. Practice by writing several full addresses on note cards, and quizzing yourself. A sample question would include writing down a full address and then asking yourself to recall the zip code, street or the family name.

Try a practice test. There are several companies that specialize in 460 postal exam practice tests. Two of the companies that produce practice exams are "460 Postal Quick Exam" and "PostalExam.com." Not only will these tests help you know what the exam will cover, but they'll give you an idea of your strengths and weaknesses, making studying more effective.

Drill yourself. The address checking section of the test asks you to compare rows of numbers to quickly determine if they are similar or different. You can create your own practice scenario by making a worksheet that lists several pairs of numbers that are either the same or only slightly different. See how quickly you can pick out the numbers that are identical pairs.

Practice your listening skills. The oral component of the test requires you to follow long, complicated sets of instructions to the best of your ability. Use a practice test set of tapes and videos, or have friends quiz you on your ability to remember and follow long, drawn out instructions.

Be in top form. The night before the test, make sure to get plenty of rest. Prepare all of your test taking materials, find directions to the testing site and make sure you have everything ready to go in advance. This will help ease anxiety the morning of the test. Also, make sure to eat before going in.
