A legal transcriptionist has an important job to do, and legal transcription professionals are in high demand. However, with the competition in the field of legal transcription today, it's important to be able to market yourself correctly. The goal of this article is to examine the best ways to market yourself as a legal transcriptionist so you always have transcription projects lined up.

Things You'll Need:

  • List of local doctors and clinics Website Fliers Business cards Resume
  1. Step 1

Use your local phone book or the Internet to create a list of local attorneys and judges to market yourself to. One great online resource for doing this is Legal Directory published by Martindell Hubell. See "Additional Resources" for a link.

Contact attorneys and judges that practice in your legal specialty and stress your strong analytical, communication and legal research skills. Tell them about your years of experience and offer to assist them on a contractual basis. Always make notes about what resulted from the communication. With this list you can organize your marketing techniques and keep track of whom you have contacted, whom you may need to follow up with and whom you have not contacted at all.

  2. Step 2

Create a stellar legal resume, if you don't already have one. There is no better tool to market yourself with when you're contacting doctor's offices and clinics via email or snail mail. Your resume should contain information about your education in legal transcription, legal transcription speed, the experience you have in the field, any notable projects you've worked on or awards won, and the character traits you have that you believe make you easy to work with. You can learn more about creating a great resume at Oroj. See "Additional Resources" for link.

  3. Step 3

Create a website. A website is the perfect platform for you to market yourself from and can be mentioned on fliers, business cards and more. Easy website builders allow you to design your own website without knowing HTML or CSS. Include an online version of your resume on your website so potential clients can see your experience and other qualifications. Also include the best contact information so potential clients can get in touch with you quickly.

  4. Step 4

Send direct-mail letters. Using your list of lawyers and judges, send letters to the offices introducing yourself and stating what you are looking for. Let HR or the person in charge of hiring know that you're available for side projects or if someone is unable to complete or start a project. Let them know that you're available locally or via telecommuting, whichever is easier for them. If no opportunities are available, ask that they keep your contact information in case they need your legal transcription services in the future.

  5. Step 5

Ask your past employers for references or testimonials of your work habits, character, how well you got the job done and more. By having testimonials and references to send to potential clients, you have a better chance of receiving the job. When potential clients see that you did a great job for past clients, they will be more apt to hire you. Learn more at Freelance Writing Success. See "Additional Resources" for link.
