How to Be Safe at the ATM
ATMs are almost everywhere, and they make it convenient for you to get cash whenever you need it and do bank transactions after hours. However, using your debit card at an ATM when you are careless can make you a target for mugging or robbery as well as for identity theft. Use common sense and keep a few tips in mind to avoid becoming a victim and to be safe at the ATM.

1
Use ATMs located in neighborhoods that you know and that are well lit. Try to use a drive-up location where you don't have to get out of your car, keep your doors locked and be cognizant of pedestrians around you and cars behind you.
-
2
Pay attention to anything that looks out of the ordinary. Notice if there have been any changes to the machine. There should be nothing attached to the slot where you insert your card or to the keypad. If you see anything unusual, don't use the ATM and report it to the proper bank.

3
Don't use an ATM if there's a note affixed to the machine. A bank will not post information in this manner. If the machine is out of order, there will be a message on the electronic screen.
-
4
Shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN number so people near you cannot see the keys. Also, you may not notice a camera on the actual ATM, but there could be one in the vicinity that you don't know about.
-
5
Fill out any deposit slips or complete your transaction paperwork before you get to the ATM to minimize the amount of time you spend at the machine.
-
6
Always take your receipts with you, never leave them at the ATM or use the trash can there.
-
7
Put away any cash you withdraw in your wallet or purse immediately following the ATM transaction. Walking around with cash in your hand makes you an easy target for theft.
