Step 1
Use ATMs located in neighborhoods that you know and that are well lit. It's preferable to use a drive-up location where you don't have to get out of your car. If you do this, keep your doors locked and be cognizant of any pedestrians around you and any cars behind you.
-
Step 2
Pay attention to anything that looks out of the ordinary or if it appears there have been any changes to the ATM machine. There should be nothing attached to the slot you enter your card into or the key pad. If you see anything attached - don't use the ATM and report it to the proper bank.
-
Step 3
Don't use an ATM if there's a note affixed to the machine. A bank will not post information in this manner. If the machine is out of order, there will be a message on the electronic screen.
-
Step 4
Shield the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN number. You may not notice a camera on the actual ATM but there could be one in the vicinity that you don't know about. Also be wary of other customers' proximity to you if using a free-standing ATM instead of a drive-thru.
-
Step 5
Always take your receipts with you, never leave them at the ATM or use the trash can there. You shouldn't leave personal financial information there and you can use this to reconcile your bank statement.
-
Step 6
Put your cash withdrawn in your wallet or purse immediately after the ATM transaction. Don't walk around with cash in your hand, it will make you an easy target for theft.
