Things You'll Need:
- white cane sugar
- distilled water
- Hummingbird feeder
- flowers which attract Hummingbirds
-
Step 1
Hummingbirds require a special feeder which can be found at home and garden stores, department stores and online. They also require liquid feed made specifically for them. You can make your own feed with white sugar cane and water. Preparing this is easy; bring to a boil in a large saucepan, one part sugar to four parts water. It's only necessary to boil the mixture for a minute or two. Never add food coloring or honey, as many experts will tell you that by doing so can kill Hummingbirds. Store unused portions of you Hummingbird feed in the refrigerator.
-
Step 2
It is important to keep the feeder clean during warm weather as humidity breeds mold.
-
Step 3
Because Hummingbirds do not shy easily, take advantage of this by placing the feeder near your deck or patio or near a window where you can enjoy watching them.
-
Step 4
Now for the flowers that Hummingbirds are drawn to... red flowers are known to attract them best, but they are also enticed by other colors as well, such as blues or purples. Flowers with long tubes are especially good for their long bills. Some good flower choices are: Butterfly weed, Hosta, Purple coneflower, Verbena and the Day Lily.
