Step 1
TOPICALLY
Topical application for the treatment of aches, pains and rheumatism was sometimes done by making a tea from the leaves. Juniper leaves were boiled in water and then turpentine was added. Turpentine is a fluid obtained by the distillation of tree remnants. -
Step 2
It has been suggested that the most successful Native American topical treatmentments for aches, pains and rheumatism contained fat added to juniper berries. Here is a recipe for topical application of the berries with fat added:
2 cups crushed juniper berries
2 cups oil or lard
Simmer the juniper berries in the oil or lard over very low heat. Store in the refrigerator and apply over areas affected by aches, pains and rheumatism as needed.
A less effective, but longer lasting version of the ointment can be made by straining the juniper berries from the mixture and adding beeswax while hot to thicken the mixture. This can be stored in a jar until ready to use. -
Step 3
TEA
In addition to topical treatment, a tea has been made from the roots and berries of the juniper tree as health tonic. This tea can be stored in the refrigerator and used topically as well for aches, pains and rheumatism.
