How to Become a Licensed Pyrotechnician

Seek training to become a pyrotechnician.

A pyrotechnician works with fireworks. Anyone interested in becoming a pyrotechnician must contact the state regulating agency in which the prospective pyrotechnician lives. Not all states require a license to display fireworks, but pyrotechnicians still must obtain permits and follow other rules.

1. Meet the basic requirements. You must be at least 18 years old to work on a fireworks crew. Some states require fireworks crew members to be 21. If you want to be a display operator in charge of a fireworks show you'll need to be at least 21, regardless of where you live.

2. Work on a fireworks crew as an apprentice to get experience. In some cases, you must apprentice as much as two years before you can get a license in a state such as California. Join a group such as the American Pyrotechnics Association to make contact with others in the profession or approach the display operator at a fireworks show to inquire about becoming a crew member.

3. Apply for a license if your state requires one. This process could include providing proof of apprenticeship and letters of recommendation from licensed pyrotechnicians for whom you've worked, filling out application forms, passing a background check and passing a written exam.

• Some states may require additional training, such as studying to get a commercial driver's license or hazardous materials certification.
