Instructions

1
Cut the plywood into five pieces, each 16 inches wide. Two pieces should equal the width of the board. Two more pieces should measure 16 inches by 14.5 inches and the final piece should measure 16 inches by the width you select.
-
2
Set the final piece of plywood aside for the moment. Form a box shape with the other four pieces. The two 16 by 14.5 inch pieces should be sandwiched between the two longer boards on the end.
-
-
3
Run a line of glue along the two side edges of each smaller piece of plywood, then press against the larger pieces to form the box.
-
4
Attach the pieces together firmly by screwing in three deck screws on each corner. Space the screws about 5 inches apart, with the screws on the top and bottom 1 inch from the edge.
-
5
Run a line of glue on the four side edges of the remaining piece of plywood, on the side that will be inside the box. Place the remaining piece down on top of the box, lining up the edges. Secure in place by attaching deck screws on all four sides, spaced 5 inches apart.
-
6
Turn the box right side up so that the plywood board is on the bottom.
-
7
Cut the 2 by 4 inch board so that it fits inside the box. You should cut it 1.5 inches shorter than the width of the box.
-
8
Place the 2 by 4 inch board inside the box, flush against the top edge of the back side. Attach the board to the box with the 2 1/4 inch deck screws. Use one screw on each side and three on the inside of the box.
-
9
Cut the piece of birch plywood so that it is 18 inches wide and 2 inches longer than the width of the box.
-
10
Position the plywood over the box so that it extends 2 inches beyond the front of the box and 1 inch out on each side. Attach the birch plywood to the box using the hinges. Follow the instructions included with the hinges for proper installation. You want the lid to be able to open fully.
-
11
Paint or stain the bench and let it dry overnight.
