Dun and Bradstreet, often known simply as D&B (or DNB, after their website), is the largest and most well-known reference source on business listings and credit information. The D&B files include information on more than 100 million businesses around the world, ranging from multinational giants, to mom and pop stores on the corner. The also own Hoovers, the well-known business information service. If you run a business of any sort, you may want to make sure you're listed at Dun & Bradstreet. Here's how to do it.

**Check to See if Your Company has a D&B Listing**
Head to dnb.com to get a quick overview of Dun and Bradstreet. Check the "About D&B" section if you want to learn more about the company itself.
The main thing to check, though, is whether your company is already listed in the DNB database (it certainly may be, even if you've never provided them with any direct information).
In the "Find a Company" search box, enter your company name and your state, and click Find. If you're in the database, you'll see a listing for your company. If not, then you can opt to be listed.

**Decide If a D&B Listing Is Right For Your Company**
A D&B listing provides your business with a DUNS number (often written as D-U-N-S). The 9-digit DUNS number is a unique identifier for your business. It can be important because many operations require a company to have a DUNS number before you can enter into business with them. For instance, if you want to do any work with the federal government, or with most state governments, you'll probably need a DUNS number before you can get started.
There is no cost for being assigned a DUNS number. It may be worth having, just to make sure you are listed in D&B as an established business.
