Step 1
We got estimates on new bushes and flowers after doing an addition. Wow was it ever expensive. So I bought a few magazines on gardening and got a few out of the library.
-
Step 2
Read up on what thrives in your area. We have trouble with deer here in NJ so I looked for plants deer did not like. Watch out for the mature size of a plant. You don't want a tree that will grow taller than your house in your garden.
-
Step 3
Big money saver find some high school age boys and pay them by the hour to clear the spot you plan on planting. You have to be home to supervise the work or else it will take days. Boys this age are strong and often in need of cash. I find it helpful to speak with their parents before you begin. A reminder from Mom or Dad will get them to the job on time.

Step 4
Visit two or three local garden centers. Find out who carries what you need at what price. I bought some of my bushes from different garden centers as each place had its own particular specialties. Sometimes a little more money does mean a better bush so be wary of deals that are to good to be true.
-
Step 5
Day of planting have spot ready, mulch or rocks purchased and tools prepared. Have high school boys back and be ready with lots of drinks. Dig holes and fertilize bushes as per instructions, usually attached to the bush. Save all receipts and instructions in a safe place. If your bush dies in two weeks, most places will replace it.

Step 6
Very important!!! Water bushes often without water they will not make it. Good luck! This is definitely a project but it will bring you satisfaction for a long time.
