How to Convert From WMV to MPEG

WMV files that have been saved on your computer can be viewed using Windows Media Player or other similar software programs. If you want to watch the video on your portable media player, however, you may need to convert the WMV file to a MPEG file. Standard media players will not allow you to convert video files. By downloading and installing a converter, however, you can convert any WMV file saved on your computer to a MPEG file.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and install a free trial of WinAVI Converter (see Resources below).

    • 2

Open WinAVI Converter after the program has been installed.

    • 3

Click the "Menu" button at the top of the program. Put your cursor over the "Format Convert" option. Then, select "Any to DVD/VCD/SVCD/MPEG."

    • 4

Search for and select the WMV file saved on your computer that you want to convert to a MPEG file. Then, click "Open."

    • 5

Click the "Browse" button to the right of the "Output Directory" option. Then, choose a folder or other destination on your computer. This is where the converted MPEGs will be saved.

    • 6

Click the drop box beneath "Output Format." Select "MPEG1." Click "OK" when you're done. The WMV file will then be converted to a MPEG file.

Tips & Warnings

  • Every file you convert using the trial version of WinAVI will have a watermark in the middle of the video. You must purchase the program in order to convert files without a watermark. To buy WinAVI, open the program and click the "Buy Now" button at the top of the software program. You will then be taken to the WinAVI Web page. From there, you can purchase the serial number for the program.

  • Beware of "free" programs that claim to be able to convert WMV files to MPEGs, as these programs may contain spyware, trojans or other malware that can damage your computer.
