Polar fleece is warm and soft, making it a favorite for many projects, ranging from blankets to jackets. One of its best qualities is that it doesn't unravel, so the edges do not need to be finished with a sewing machine. Fringe is often used to add a decorative, and more finished look to the edging. Scissors are awkward for cutting fringe, and do not leave a clean cut. There is an easier way to cut fringe in polar fleece, using tools found at fabric and quilt shops.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Polar fleece
  • Cutting mat
  • Metal ruler
  • Rotary cutter
  • Scissors
  1. Step 1

Lay out your fleece on top of the cutting mat. Smooth out any wrinkles, particularly around the edges you will be fringing.

  2. Step 2

Use the rotary cutter to cut out a 4-inch square from each corner of the polar fleece blanket or garment where you will be fringing. Cut along the ruler so that the cutter does not slip, and cuts straight.

  3. Step 3

Make 4-inch cuts along the cut at 1-inch intervals until the polar fleece is completely fringed. You can make your fringe longer or shorter than 4 inches, but you will need to adjust the size of the corner squares accordingly.

  4. Step 4

Cut a 1/4-inch slit in the center of the base of each piece of fringe. Loop the end of each piece of fringe through the slit, and pull tight to secure it, and give it a finished look.

Tips & Warnings
  • Instead of slitting and looping the fringe, make a double layer blanket by laying an equal size piece of fleece on top each other, and tying the fringe together.
  • Always use caution and a fresh blade with your rotary cutter to avoid injury.
