Restart a Computer With No Monitor

If your computer has been running for a long time, or gets stuck performing an operation, you may need to restart it in order to get it to work properly. If you are running a computer without any kind of display attached, that could seem like a pretty daunting task. Rebooting your computer without a monitor is actually a lot easier than you might think, and is a process much like you would normally do to restart your computer when you have a display.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the CTRL, ALT, and DEL keys simultaneously.

    • 2

      Press ENTER.

    • 3

Wait a 30 seconds to a minute, and listen for the sounds of your computer restarting. If you hear nothing, try pressing ENTER again.

    • 4

Hold the power button down for 3 seconds, and then release it, if you were unsuccessful with Steps 1 through 3.

    • 5

Turn off the power strip your computer is attached to, count to 3, and then turn it back on if Steps 1 through 4 are unsuccessful.

Tips & Warnings

  • Only turn your computer off through the power strip as a final attempt at restarting, after everything else has failed, to avoid losing data.
