How to Replace an Aluminum Door Threshold

Replacing an aluminum door threshold is a quick and easy way to keep your energy bills down. The threshold helps prevent outside air from seeping under the door, and your heat or air-conditioning from escaping. In addition, thresholds form a barrier to avoid giving insects a clear path into your house. Aluminum lasts longer than traditional wooden thresholds, and it is easier to clean and maintain. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Check and see if the old threshold is connected to the floor with screws or nails. Remove the screws (with a screwdriver) or nails (with the hammer claw) that are holding down the threshold.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to pry up the old threshold. Be careful not to break the trim on the side. Once the old threshold is up, use the broom to clean up any debris that is underneath. Make sure all old caulk and nails or screws are removed.

    • 3

Measure the length for the new aluminum threshold. Mark the measurement on the new threshold and cut it with the hacksaw.

    • 4

Gently file it to remove all burrs on the threshold. Dry-fit the new threshold to make sure the fit is correct.

    • 5

Apply caulk to the bottom of the threshold, making sure the bottom is completely covered with caulk. Put the threshold in the proper position, and secure it with either screws or nails.

    • 6

Wipe off the excess caulk with a rag. Open and close the door to check for clearance.

Tips & Warnings

  • Aluminum thresholds bend easily, and too much pressure can make them break. Always dry-fit all parts before the final installation.

  • Use caution with aluminum, which can be very sharp. Work gloves can be worn to prevent injury.
