So you want to be a pilot! Flight training is the first step in making your dream of flying a reality. Flight school is expensive. The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association estimates that it costs anywhere from $5000 to $9000 to get a single engine private pilots license. If you want to get a multi-engine license, flight instructor license or commercial pilot license, the costs will be significantly higher. Lack of money does not have to stop you from flying. When looking at flight schools, inquire about payment plans and financing.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Talk with other pilots, if you know any, to get a recommendation for a flight school.

  2. Step 2

Visit your local airports and look for flight schools. Walk into the flight schools that you find and speak with a flight instructor or other flight school staff member about the flight training programs offered at the school and prices. Also, look around for flyers at the airport that advertise flight training.

  3. Step 3

Search on the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) Flight School Directory to find flight schools in your area. The AOPA Flight School Directory is a website which lets you search by zip code to find flight schools and airports in your area. (Check the "Resource" section of this article for a website link to the AOPA Flight School Directory.)

  4. Step 4

Go to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Pilot Schools search tool on their website to search for flight schools in your area. The FAA Pilot Search tool allows you to search for flight schools by city, state or flight school name. (Check the "Resource" section of this article for a website link to the FAA Pilot Search tool.)

  5. Step 5

Look at the advertisements in a pilot magazine to find flight school training programs. Plane and Pilot Magazine is a popular magazine for pilots that is available for purchase in many magazine stores.

  6. Step 6

Join a pilot club. Being part of a pilot club gives you access to experienced pilots who can share valuable information on flight training with you. Search for pilot club advertisements at your local airport and in your local newspaper.
