How to Make Your Own Lincoln Logs

Lincoln Logs have been a part of many childhood memories since John Lloyd Wright, son of the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright, invented them in 1916. Lincoln Logs are wood pieces notched to imitate the logs needed to structure a log cabin like the one President Lincoln lived in, hence the name, and are used by children the world over. The concept is simple, yet the variety of designs kids come up with using the logs seems almost endless. Learn how to make your own version of this popular toy at home with nothing more than wood, sandpaper, and a carving knife.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

• Tree wood
• Sandpaper
• Carving knife
• Acrylic paint or varnish (optional)

1. Walk through the woods and locate pieces of solid, round wood of varying lengths but between one inch and 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

2. Round out the logs to the desired shape and texture using your carving knife and sandpaper. Leaving your Lincoln Logs with a slightly rough texture adds to the realism.

3. Notch the logs on each end. The notch can be made with the carving knife in three cuts. A quarter inch deep and 1 and 1/2" on either side. Place one of these notches on each end of your log.

4. Use craft sticks in conjunction with your homemade Lincoln Logs to construct roofs and floors. You can paint your finished logs with acrylic paint if you choose, or just use a wood varnish.
