How to Make a Speaker

The design, construction and marketing of home speakers is a multi-million dollar industry. Designing all the components of a home speaker from the ground up is a complicated task involving acoustics, design and materials and industrial engineering. But, with simple materials and off-the-shelf components, it's possible to make a robust, well-constructed speaker for many home audio applications. The speaker sketched out here would an excellent performer for a workshop, hobby room or garage.

  • 3/4-inch MDF (medium density fiberboard)
  • 5-1/4-inch 2-way car speaker
  • Terminal cup
  • Speaker wire
  • Circular or table saw
  • Jig saw
  • Drill
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut two pieces of MDF for the front and rear panels of the speaker enclosure. The dimensions will be 7 by 12 inches.

      Cut two pieces of MDF for the side panels. The dimensions will be 6 by 12 inches.

      Cut two pieces of MDF for the top and bottom panels. The dimensions will be 5-1/2 by 12 inches.

      Cut an opening in the center of the front panel for the speaker. Use the speaker as a template for the correct size of the opening.

      Cut an opening in the bottom center of the rear panel for the terminal cup. Use the terminal cup as a template for the opening's size.

      Mount the side and top panels together. The side panels will overlap the ends of the top and bottom panels. Attach the panels together with wood screws and wood glue.

      Attach the front and rear panels. Use wood glue and wood screws to attach them to the side and top panels.

      Connect an 8-inch length of speaker wire to the back tabs of the terminal cup. Feed the wire into the opening for the cup. Mount the terminal cup into the opening with wood screws.

      Connect the other end of the speaker wire to the terminals of the speaker. Mount the speaker into the opening of the front panel with wood screws.
